On a surface level, we have the authors of this play signing and inscribing this first edition copy to the producer of the original docudrama play, Guthrie McClintic. The authors, Sidney Howard and Paul de Kruif, were both acclaimed in their own professions with Howard being an Oscar and Pulitzer winning writer and Kruif being an acclaimed microbiologist. This combination alone serves as a stunning piece of theatre history. However, with some look at the content matter of this play, more interesting concepts come into focus, particularly when considering Kruif's history as a microbiologist. There are many theories out there as to how the "Spanish Flu" actually started, and while I am not the person to tell you how I think it started, the existence and continued support of these theories makes this also an interesting book in the context of conspiracy. For those unaware, the common theory is that certain experiments actually were happening in the United States and that is the real source of the disease. It was interesting to me to be aware of these theories and encounter this book, as this connection is not one I have seen any other seller make, but to me it is possibly more significant than any other factor. Finally, this book has a small dose of lesbian / gay history. The producer who owned this book, according to "GLBTQ.com: An Encyclopedia of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Culture", was probably in what was termed at the time a "lavendar marriage" with a lesbian wife. "Even in theatrical circles, little was known about Cornell's and McClintic's sexual lives beyond the general impression that both were gay." So all in all, this is a one-of-a-kind book that can fit in a variety of collections, due to its excellent condition/beauty and the unique stories contained within. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thank you for visiting ProfessBooks. Happy Reading!
