Description: British Punch magazine -- from 1841 to 2002, the magazine cast a satirical eye on life in Britain. It charted the interests, concerns and frustrations of the country and today it stands as an invaluable resource not just as cartoon art and satire, but as primary source material for historians. Illustrator: John Tenniel (illustrator of Alice in Wonderland, from British Punch humor/satire magazine, February 8, 1868, vintage original, not a modern reproduction. Size 8 x 10 1/2 inches. Condition: excellent -- light age toning, otherwise clean, no handling wear, paper lays flat for easy framing; backside is blank. THE ZULU BRIDEBishop Tait: “Stay! I Protest!”Bishop Gray: “Upon what grounds, my Lord?”Bishop Tait: “Bigamy! She’s married already.” --This cartoon refers to Basutoland (later Lesotho), a land-locked country in South Africa. Tait, Bishop of London, and Bishop Robert Gray, of Cape Town, discuss the issue of bigamy within the Zulu tribe. Basutoland was originally inhabited by the San, but these people were superseded by the Sotho, a people driven south by the rise of the Zulu nation. The Sotho nation was founded by Moshoeshoe I in 1827 and, in 1868, at his request Basutoland became a British Protectorate. In this cartoon, presumably the groom is English and the marriage an allusion to British control of the Basotho beginning in January 1868. The Cape Colony’s Bishop Gray argues it is not valid.Over 4,000 Punch cartoons listed for sale (store category "Punch cartoons") -- humor, satire and propaganda; combine orders and save shipping charges.
